Tubular Rims:

We are pleased to anounce the arrival of ENVE rims to the UK. Previously Edge Composites, they have been tried and tested in the Pro-peleton and they are amongst the lightest and strongest available. Nice to build and nice to ride - if you feel you need something at the leading edge of technology and want the reliability of handbuilt wheels, treat yourself. The 45mm rim is also available as a clincher.

Gigantex rims are the best all-round carbon tubular rims we have used. We have stocked the 50mm rims over the last 4 years and new ties directly with the factory mean we will have a constant supply from October 2010. They come in 20h/24h......

For tubular road applications the Ambrosio Nemesis sprint rim takes some beating. Widely used in the Classics races including Paris-Roubaix - they can be built 32h or 36h and will last many seasons of abuse. If you don't race on cobbles  the F20 Crono rim is a lighter alternative. The F20 rim is a lighter alloy and to get the best out of them you need to be <80kg however heavier riders have used them - even for cyclocross.

Tubs vs Clinchers:

Tubulars are comfortable, safe, they don't seem to puncture as much as clinchers(?) and there is a huge variety of them on the market nowadays. If you use Tufo tape, they can be quicker to change than clinchers when you get used to doing it. Take a tub off and a very thin sticky residue is left, enough to finish a race safely with the spare. Or use Vittoria PitStop latex sealant. I haven't had a bad experience with it - this little video says 1mm cuts but its good for 2mm or so:

Peter Burgin is still fixing tubs if you have high-end racing tubulars with a puncture.

Here's a handy little video for mounting Continental tyres or similar to a tubular rim if you are having any doubts about moving to tubulars. The same can be done with Veloflex or Vittoria type tubs with a latex-primed basetape, just use Velox Jantex tape instead.......

Of course, for the majority of people the wire-on tyre is the easiest to live with. If you are commuting or touring, they can be made virtually puncture-proof. And for training, they can be cheaper in the long run, especially if you are riding on bad road surfaces and are used to getting a lot of flats. You can still use Pitstop effectively though so its worth carrying if you can't be bothered changing a tube roadside.

Clinchers:

We have now finished extensive testing of the new 38mm, 50mm and 60mm Gigantex clinchers in the Alps, southern France and the pothole ridden roads of Central Scotland! Quite a few guys have now notched up miles of trouble-free riding at descending speeds up to 65mph and they have proved every bit as strong and reliable as the tubulars. Not much heavier either. They are supplied with pads too. The 38mm sets are a true aero profile and are nice and nimble for criteriums or general racing. They are limited stock so only available as custom wheelsets to order.

The time-honoured Ambrosio Excellight SSC are our favourite alloy low-profile rims. Ambrosio rims add a touch of class as well as being very stong, balanced and hand-finished rims. Good for anyone up to 100kg. The Excellence rims are only a little bit heavier (450g) but have a box section and a thicker braking surface - maybe better for general riding or winter training or for heavier riders for all-year use.

Wheels for more challenging use, loaded touring, commuting and couriers would do well with the Evolution or Excursion rims. These have similar dimensions to but are a slightly thicker extrusion than the Excellight - they are strong enough even for 32h tandem use.

We've been using Interloc Racing Design Niobium clincher rims for a few years now. These come in the Road and VSR pairs (390g + 395g) - the rear being an asymmetric design to offset the dish on a cassette rear hub - this creates a more even tension at the rear, helping to get the best out of these very light rims.

30mm Cadence Aero rim is available 20h to 32h drillings (460g) for a deeper section, lower spoke wheel. These are excellent for time-trialling, cyclo-cross, criteriums, general road racing and training, being incredibly strong and remaining stiff even with less spokes. With a 23c tyre mounted they are have a true "aero" profile ie. 3/1 in depth to width.

Tubeless:

We also have Stan's No-Tubes ZTR Alpha 700c rim. They weight about 340-350g depending on drillings - which are 18,24,28 & 32h. These are super light and due to the construction do allow a decent amount of lateral stiffness if built up sympathetically. Chris King, Tune and Extralite seem to do the trick. They can be used as normal clinchers or tubeless with a valve kit available if required. These rims build up stiffer that you would expect, given their light weight.

MTB:

MTB Rims come mostly from Stans NoTubes, Kinlin, Rigida. Stan's are super-light 6000 series alloy rims mostly used in competitive applications and for those who weight means everything. Partner them with reliable hubs from PMP, CarbonTi. Chris King etc and you will have a class-leading set at a rediculously light weight. Especially with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. There is a massive range of Rigida rims so call if you need advice.

Hubs:

We use Extralite, Chris King, Carbon-Ti, Royce, PMP, Campagnolo, Shimano, Novatec/Joytech & Ambrosio.

The PMP hubs are very impressive and offer superb bearings and build quality. They are great with wheels with lower spoke counts.

Carbon Ti hubs are a great balance of real lightweight and real longevity. Oversized hub shells house Japanese bearings and a knurled pre-load adjuster.

Chris King have a worldwide reputation for reliability. They have a unique ratchet design for instant pick-up and seem to build a stronger wheel than anything else. Easily maintainable and great back-up service - an investment!

We are also proud to present the new Extralite range. Their new 135g SLX rear has arrived and the redesigned SX and SL2 will enable the lightest possible pair and still achieve reliablilty. We only supply them with the Zero-Up factory fitted ceramic bearing option front and rear.

Spokes:

ACI  Stainless double-butted are excellent spokes - they are 20% Chromium, fit hub holes nicely with a smooth bend & nicely rolled  thread.

For lighter builds we use Sapim Laser and Sapim CX-Ray - the lightest available and very strong under tension - CX-Rays are forged flat versions of the Laser and are only 4.8g each.

Note that Sapim Lasers are not usually suited to use on the rear wheel where a lot of torques come into play - especially if you are heavier. Although they are the same weight as CX-Rays, they do not stand up to these dynamics well and are more suited to front use only. Ideally partenered to ACI spokes on the rear.

Tyres and Tubs:

After much testing and feedback we are proud to stock Schwalbe tubs and tyres. Their Milano tubulars are excellent budget tubs and the Ultremo R.1, superb racing tyres. These can be fitted for you so the wheels will be ready to ride straight from the box. Ultremo HC tubulars are now in stock - as used by Cancellara and all that lot. Probably the best tubular available for high-performance use and racing.

Rebuilds:

Wheel rebuilds can be carried out -  if you need your wheels upgraded, refurbished,  rims replaced, new hubs or spokes, or even re-nippling after a heavy winter - just ask. Prices depend on work required. Please contact us first before sending wheels as space isn't always available.

NOTE: rebuilds will only be carried out on hubs which are currently available retail or

new-old-stock unused items. Please endeavour to check your hubs for cracks before sending.
